‘This Work They Call Love’ is an ongoing project that consists of portraits of mothers printed and pieced together on various unconventional materials. The project exists on two planes, the original photographs and the final tactile pieces. The driving force is to capture and explore the resiliency women cultivate during motherhood. Women often shoulder the work of caregiving, finding themselves in uncharted waters and circumstances that give them no choice but to navigate on hard won faith in their instincts, alone. Once the moment is frozen and ready to print it turns out the proper materials, the paper, is not forthcoming. Instead, materials must be gathered and inserted in their stead. Cardboard, grocery bags, envelopes, anything at hand is substituted as a way of building the image against all odds. The picture must be printed, the job must be done, no matter the obstacles. The project feels like an offering to women everywhere that we see the work others call love.
‘This Work They Call Love’ was included in the 2024 edition of the Critical Mass Top 50 presented by Photolucida.
